Every year, we successfully train many students in becoming fully-qualified beauty therapists. Beauticians are specialists in discussing and understanding client requirements, analysing and advising on skincare and beauty regimes, giving treatments, and applying cosmetics.
On this Level 2 course you will be supported by expert beauty tutors in gaining professional, hands-on training experience with real clients. You will also develop confidence and customer service skills within an industry-standard salon.

GCSE maths can be taken alongside the course if you do not achieve grade 4 or above in your GCSE’s prior to the course. GCSE English language grade 4 or above must be achieved prior to the course.
You will learn various aspects of skin care and make-up treatments, methods of waxing and basic hair removal and how to give luxury manicures and pedicures. Your study will also look at employment standards and you will develop your communication skills for when dealing with clients.
You will learn about stock control, selling and health and safety so you are aware of safe working practices and salon practices. You will have the opportunity to work in the college salons, supporting other students and dealing with clients in a real commercial environment.
How you'll learn and be assessed
You’ll learn through discussions, expert demonstrations by experienced beauty practitioners and practical activities in our industry-standard facilities.
We are open to the public and are run like a professional salon, so you’ll have the opportunity to practice your professional beauty treatments on customers, whilst gaining work experience in the industry.
Your course will also involve a one-week work placement and will be involved in organising and taking part in several enrichment activities that are linked to producing a portfolio of your work.
This course requires a large amount of self-directed study and you will need to ensure that you are working for a minimum of 3 hours per week self-study. You will have access to City and Guilds Smartscreen which has resources and handouts to able you to revise and look over your routines.
You will be assessed each time you enter the salon on your professional standards to ensure you are meeting the standards of industry.
The course is divided into three main forms of assessments:
- a two and a half-hour theory paper
- a six–seven hour practical day
- a three-hour written task
All of these elements are graded Pass, Merit or Distinction and an overall outcome for each unit will give you a final grade at the end of the year based on exam results and quality of work and national average.
A minimum of 95% attendance is required on the programme to ensure you are not missing essential information.
