Thinking about a career in construction but not sure where to start? Or are you looking to learn a trade and not sure which direction to take?

On this practical and hands-on course, you will have a whole house to work on to improve your construction skills! The old caretaker’s house has been used as offices in recent years, but is now available to all Banbury construction students to practice their new multi-trade skills, overseen by our experienced and supportive staff.

Upon successful completion of the course, you will gain a Multi-Trade Construction Skills City & Guilds Level 1 Extended Certificate. You can then potentially progress onto a Construction Level 2 programme, another vocational study programme, or apprenticeship within your chosen trade.

All 16–19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and maths—or to undertake Functional Skills—if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade 4 (C) in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.

This course is an excellent start to a career in the construction industry as it will give you an in-depth understanding of what is required of each trade and give you an insight to the various career paths within this lucrative industry.

You will get the opportunity to develop skills from a range of different areas, such as:

  • wood working
  • plastering
  • painting and decorating
  • bricklaying
  • wall and floor tiling
  • …and more!

You will also learn about core subject areas, such as health and safety, and working and communicating effectively in the construction trades.

In addition, you will develop skills in joinery, fit architrave and skirting, fit ironmongery to an internal door, use plaster materials to produce moulds, plaster a ceiling walls and corners, apply paint to substrates, apply wallpapers to substrates, prepare substrates for painting and decorating, and you’ll build a block wall brick wall and cavity wall.

Teaching methods include:

  • tutor demonstration 
  • individual guidance, support, and feedback
  • hands-on experience and experimentation
  • formal instruction 
  • open and friendly guided discussion 

Upon successful completion of this course, you could progress to Level 2 Carpentry, Bricklaying, Plumbing, Electrical, or begin an apprenticeship.

You will be required to purchase the correct overalls, boots and PPE.

There are no formal entry requirements. However, you will need to have an interest in the construction industry and be prepared to undertake an entry assessment during your interview.

Entry decisions will be discretionary at interview. Students will continually be assessed through probation period to ensure they are capable of completing the course successfully.
