Course Units 

Over the course of the year, you will study seven units that cover the full breadth of the logistics industry: 

Unit 

What Students Will Learn 

Working in Logistics 

How supply chains work, different logistics job roles, career opportunities, and workplace rules and legislation. 

Working Safely in Logistics 

Health and safety requirements, PPE, accident prevention, hazard awareness, and employee responsibilities. 

Receiving and Storing Goods 

How goods are received, checked, moved, stored safely, and organised within a warehouse. 

Stock Control 

How to record, monitor, order, and manage stock to maintain accuracy and meet customer demand. 

Route Planning 

How delivery routes are planned, the technology used, and how routes are monitored and improved. 

Security in Logistics 

How to protect goods, people, facilities, and information, including cyber security and GDPR awareness. 

Communication Skills for Work 

How to communicate effectively in the workplace through speaking, writing, documents, emails, and presentations. 

 

Additional Qualifications 

Alongside the main certificate, you will also work towards three Ascentis Level 1 Awards — nationally recognised qualifications fully integrated into your course and assessed through an online multiple-choice test. No prior knowledge or experience is required for any of them.

What Students Will Learn 

Ascentis Level 1 Award in Understanding Employment, Business and Enterprise 

Provides an understanding of how businesses operate, what employers expect, and employee rights and responsibilities in the workplace. 

Ascentis Level 1 Award in Health & Safety 

Covers workplace health and safety principles, including hazard identification, risk awareness, accident prevention, and safe working practices. 

Ascentis Level 1 Award in Environmental Sustainability 

Introduces sustainability principles and environmental responsibility, helping students understand how logistics activities can support greener supply chains and net-zero goals. 

Manual Handling Certificate 

Develops practical skills for safely lifting, carrying, and moving loads, following industry-standard manual handling procedures commonly required in logistics and warehousing roles. 

 

Industry Visits and Guest Speakers 

Learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to: 

  • Visit a working distribution centre or warehouse — see a real logistics operation in action and understand what a typical working day looks like 
  • Visit a transport or haulage company — experience how fleets are managed, routes are planned, and deliveries are coordinated at scale 
  • Hear from industry professionals — logistics managers, transport planners, warehouse supervisors, and supply chain specialists will come into college to share their experiences and give you an honest picture of the sector 
  • Meet potential employers — some visits and speaker sessions are with local companies who actively recruit from courses like this, giving you a head start on building professional contacts before you finish 

Course Delivery and Assessment:

This course is delivered through a blend of practical workshops, interactive sessions, and classroom-based learning, keeping things engaging and relevant to real working environments. You will be assessed through a combination of practical demonstrations, written assignments, and portfolio work — so you can show what you know in a variety of ways, not just through exams. 

On successful completion you will be awarded the Gateway Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Logistics.

No formal experience is required. You will need one of the following: 

  • GCSE English at grade 2 or above 
  • ESOL English at Level 1 or above 

 

You will also require:

  • Notebook or journal: for recording reflections, insights, and key concepts discussed in class
  • Pens and highlighters: useful for note-taking and emphasising important points in study materials
  • Textbooks and course materials: as specified by the course instructor, crucial for following along with the curriculum and completing assignments
  • Laptop or tablet: for accessing online resources, participating in virtual classes, and organising digital notes and documents
