Banbury and Bicester College plants commemorative tree to honour the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Banbury and Bicester College planted a commemorative tree on Wednesday 25 May in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Reverend Canon Jeff West and Richard Moyle and President of Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell joined Sam Stavis, Head of Campus – Student Experience at Banbury and Bicester College and Foundation and Supported Studies students and staff to mark the special occasion and its upcoming celebrations.

Accompanied by students from the Broughton Road campus, Reverend Canon Jeff West led the service supported by Richard Moyle, reflecting on this historic event before students planted the tree.

Gary Headland, Chief Executive Officer at Activate Learning, said: “It has been wonderful to come together as a college community, with the wider community we are part of, to mark this incredibly special occasion and celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“This is but a small token of our appreciation and respect for everything Her Majesty has done for the people of this country in her time as monarch, but one I hope will be enjoyed by many generations to come.”

The Tree

Located in the college’s South Site, the Acre Griseum tree will soon be embellished with a plaque made by Rycotewood at City of Oxford College, in honour of Her Majesty and the celebrations.

Two of Banbury and Bicester College’s Foundation and Supported Studies learners, Becky Skinner and Luke Twitchen, took the responsibility of planting the tree on the college grounds.

Luke shared: “It was excellent to do something special for the queens Jubilee. I am looking forward to seeing it grow”

The tree marks the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne and forms part of the celebrations across the Activate Learning group.

Samantha Starvis, Head of Campus – Student Experience at Banbury and Bicester College, said: “It has been wonderful to come together as a college community, with the wider community we are part of, to mark this incredibly special occasion and celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

“This is but a small token of our appreciation and respect for everything Her Majesty has done for the people of this country in her time as monarch, but one I hope will be enjoyed by many generations to come.”
