Foundation Animal Care Pathway

Develop practical animal care skills while improving your English, maths and IT, preparing you for further study or employment.

On the Foundation Animal Care Pathway, you will learn through project-based and practical activities, with assessment taking place continuously rather than through formal exams. Projects are designed around realistic animal care scenarios, helping you build confidence, practical skills and an understanding of animal welfare in a supportive environment.

Alongside your animal care studies, you will work towards improving your English, maths and IT skills, which are essential for success in further study and employment.

You will be supported by experienced staff throughout the programme and will receive advice and guidance to help you plan your next steps, whether that is progressing within the college, moving on to an apprenticeship or entering employment.

We work in partnership with external organisations and employers to ensure learning and project work reflect the skills, behaviours and expectations of the animal care industry.

On this course, you will learn:

  • Animal handling and basic animal care routines
  • Health, safety and animal welfare principles
  • Teamwork, communication and responsibility
  • English, maths and digital skills linked to animal care contexts

You will learn in a variety of ways:

  • Project-based learning and practical activities
  • Hands-on tasks based on realistic animal care scenarios
  • Continuous assessment through portfolios and projects
  • Supportive teaching with regular feedback and target setting

Successful learners may progress to a Level 2 Animal Care course, an apprenticeship or employment within the animal care sector.

There are no formal entry requirements. Applicants should have a willingness to learn, an interest in animals and a commitment to developing their skills.
